I’m a feminist so I must, right? That statement is so incredibly, horrifically wrong. In fact I’m rather fond of men. What I don’t prefer is the word feminist or feminism.
I have realized that I do identify as one but for the longest time that would be the last thing I would call myself. There are so many false, negative stereotypes that come along with such a label that I wanted absolutely no part of it. You see, the word feminism is far too close to the word female, therefore, giving people this outrageous idea that being a feminist is all about being a female.
Being a feminist is all about gender equality. Yes, GENDER, not female equality. It means I understand that male victims of rape are just as important as female victims, it also means that I do find it nauseating that there are still cases where men and women have a huge pay gap for doing the same exact job and I also believe that people that identify as transgender should not be able to be fired just for being transgender.
All that being said I still enjoy it when my boyfriend takes me out and I do shave my armpits. That doesn’t make me a hypocrite. It just shows that there are different types of feminism out there. I don’t fit a specific mold and just because I identify with a specific label does not mean I can’t believe and not believe what I want.
In my opinion feminism comes down to one simple concept: Respect each other. Seriously.
